The highly anticipated School Business Roundtable tagged “Recruiting and Retaining Competent Staff” headlined by Human Resources Expert, Mr. Soji Oyawoye and co-speaker, Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, held on January 30th, 2019, at The Bunker, Yaba, Lagos. The School Business Roundtable Edition of January was an insightful experience that was warmly received and saw a great turn out from participants such as school administrators, educational facilitators and key influencers in the educational and business sector of the country.

The January Edition of the School
Business Roundtable was just as interactive as previous editions where all
participants at the event were sharing ideas about the importance of adopting
effective strategies to identify, recruit and retain efficient staff in their
organizations, business, and corporate management. Mr. Soji Oyawoye, a veteran Human Resource Expert, mentioned that
overlooking the need for proper human resource management, effective
recruitment and retainment of quality personnel can spell doom for the growth
of any company.

He further went on to stress that every organisation must create a culture which should be internalized by every staff of the organization and that there should be a chain reaction from top to bottom, such that the ideals of the company are carried out to the letter, starting from the CEO or Managing Director of the company to the lowest placed staff in the organisation. However, he explained that there are several challenges that come with recruiting and retaining competent staff, some of which he highlighted as skill gap and toxic issues among selected staff who might eventually infect the whole workforce if not quickly removed from the system. Mr. Soji Oyawoye also stressed that staff welfare has a role to play in retaining competent staff, advising school owners and corporate business owners alike to be more humane and have empathy towards their staff as an effective staff is a happy one at home and at work.

Panel Discussion Session

Buying talents and skills or building
talents and skills? This was the question on the lips of many of the school
owners and corporate business owners, given that every business takes 15 years
to be stable and 40 years, to be tagged “a successful business”. Mr. Soji Oyawoye implored business
owners to be patient with their business as well as the working staff, but
advised that every company strike a balance between its finance, vision and
goals in building and contracting skilled staff for the growth of their
company.

Several personal experiences were shared
by business owners alike, cementing the need for a working Human Resource or
People Management Unit in every company that would expressly be proactive in
ensuring a definite work environment culture that would be internalized by the
staff and also measure staff productivity, evaluate staff welfare for the
holistic growth of the company as well as the workforce.

The January School Business Roundtable
was truly insightful and interesting, showing that business owners must keep
learning and re-learning to keep their businesses afloat with the best hands
and best strategies.
