Revamping Teacher Education: House of Reps Set to Reform Federal Colleges of Education

The Nigerian House of Representatives has scheduled a public hearing to review ten legislative bills focused on amending the Federal Colleges of Education Act and establishing new federal colleges across the country.

The hearing, organized by the House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education, will take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Conference Room 231, Second Floor, House of Representatives New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, starting at 10:00 AM.

According to Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman for the House of Representatives, the proposed legislative reforms are designed to enhance teacher education and expand access to quality training for educators.

Speaking ahead of the hearing, Rep. Adamu Tanko, Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the critical role of legislative action in improving Nigeria’s teacher training framework.

“Education remains the backbone of national development, and the training of qualified teachers is essential for sustainable progress. These bills propose the establishment of new federal colleges of education and amendments to existing laws to improve teacher training across the country,” he stated. He also urged stakeholders to actively participate, noting that their contributions will shape the future of teacher education in Nigeria.

The ten bills under review include: HB.1803 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Suleja, Niger State; HB.355 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Ijesha, Lagos State; HB.1600 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Oyin Akoko, Ondo State; HB.833 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Oke Oyi, Kwara State; HB.912 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education (Technical), Ogute Okpella, Edo State; HB.1852 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education (Technical), Uzebba-Iuleha, Edo State; HB.593 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Afon, Kwara State; HB.972 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education, Ibidep, Ibiono LGA, Akwa Ibom State; HB.438 – Establishment of Federal College of Education (Technical), Ile-Ife, Osun State; and HB.1412 – Amendment to establish Federal College of Education (Technical), Faskari, Katsina State.

The public hearing will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, National Commission for Colleges of Education, National Teachers’ Institute, state and local governments, NGOs in the education sector, and concerned members of the public. The House of Representatives has called on all relevant parties to participate, ensuring a thorough review of the proposed bills.
