Lagos State University (LASU) has reaffirmed its position as a student-centered institution, committed to grooming the next generation of great leaders. This was the resounding message from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, as the university matriculated 12,590 students for the 2024/2025 academic session on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo.
Addressing the fresh intakes, Professor Olatunji-Bello emphasized that LASU is not just an institution of learning but a transformative space where students are nurtured for leadership and excellence. Out of over 50,000 applicants, only the best were selected, and she urged them to seize the opportunity. “Count yourselves very lucky to be among the very few admitted into the university of first choice.
Focus on your studies and make the most of all opportunities,” she advised. She also stressed LASU’s commitment to academic freedom, fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking and creativity, while reminding students to uphold the rules and regulations of the university and remain dedicated to their education.
Reaffirming the institution’s zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, she urged them, “If you see something, say something.” She congratulated parents and guardians, acknowledging their role in supporting the matriculants’ academic journey.
“I enjoin you to strive for academic excellence in all that you do. It is my prayer that at the end of your programmes, we shall come together to celebrate your graduation,” she concluded.
Earlier, the Acting Dean of the Students’ Affairs Division, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, encouraged students to break free from mediocrity, stating, “The future belongs to those who are willing to work for it. Embrace a mindset of discovery, question norms, challenge your intellect, and seek knowledge beyond textbooks.”
He assured them that the Students’ Affairs Division is committed to making their LASU experience fulfilling, transformative, and memorable, encouraging participation in academic workshops, leadership programs, and professional networking events while emphasizing that reputation is their most valuable asset.
“You are now ambassadors of this great institution. Embody the core values that define LASU: Academic Excellence, Truth, Service, and Integrity.”
Adding a motivational touch, Mr. Ayoola Onabogun, a LASU alumnus and financial controller, shared his personal journey, urging students to remain focused on their goals. “Dream big, and let life’s challenges serve as catalysts for your success,” he said, illustrating how resilience and determination shaped his own achievements.
