Hit-and-Run Driver Kills FUNAAB Professor

A somber mood has enveloped the Ajebo Road Housing Estate, Kemta, Abeokuta, following the death of Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a distinguished biochemical toxicologist from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

The academic was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday, February 16, 2025, near the Prof Wole Soyinka section of the newly rehabilitated Kemta-Somorin Road.

Eyewitnesses report that Professor Ademuyiwa had just alighted from a cab and was attempting to cross the road when a speeding vehicle struck him, leaving him fatally injured. The driver fled the scene without offering assistance.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage among residents, who blame the Ogun State Government for failing to address safety concerns on the road. Dr. Ayo Ajasa, Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association, criticized the authorities for ignoring repeated appeals to install speed breakers and other safety measures.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the urgent need for government intervention. It is disheartening that despite our numerous appeals, no action has been taken. The government quickly installed speed bumps on the Ilugun end but has consistently ignored our community’s plea for similar measures,” Ajasa lamented.

He further revealed that within 24 hours of Professor Ademuyiwa’s death, another accident occurred at the same spot, reinforcing fears that the road remains a danger zone.

Residents are now calling for immediate safety improvements, including speed breakers, lorry barriers, and clear traffic signage to prevent reckless driving. They are also urging law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending the hit-and-run driver responsible for the professor’s death.
