The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has celebrated Professor Tayo Nathaniel Fagbemi, a renowned scholar in Food Science and Technology, as he marked his 70th birthday and retirement after 45 years of service in education, research, and mentorship.
The event, held on February 14, 2025, was attended by friends, family, colleagues, and past and present students, who gathered to honor his contributions to academia and the global food science community. A major highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a brand-new Toyota Corolla by his former students, who described him as a mentor who left an indelible mark on their careers and personal lives.
At a reception at the Afen Adebayo Multipurpose Hall, following a thanksgiving service at the Chapel of Faith, FUTA Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji praised Professor Fagbemi’s humility, dedication, and resourcefulness. She described him as a pillar in the Department of Food Science and Technology and encouraged him to continue contributing to academia beyond retirement. Similarly, Professor Oluwatooyin Oludahunsi, Dean of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), called him an intelligent and versatile scholar who provided academic leadership to both colleagues and students.
During the thanksgiving service, Professor Peter Ayodeji spoke on the importance of living a purposeful life, stating, “We are not permitted to fail in our assignments but must rise above limits and leave a lasting impact on everyone we meet.”
Long-time friend and Jegun Olu-Ekun of Ile-Oluji Kingdom, HRM Oba Dr. Olufaderin Adetimehin Jimoko II, also praised Fagbemi’s integrity and selfless service, highlighting his contributions to every institution he has served.
Professor Fagbemi has played a pivotal role in advancing food security and nutrition research in sub-Saharan Africa and was instrumental in establishing Food Science and Technology programs at several institutions, including Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Mountaintop University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and FUTA. As he steps into retirement, the overwhelming appreciation for his contributions reflects the remarkable legacy he leaves behind in academia and the field of food science. His dedication to mentorship, research, and innovation has shaped the careers of many and strengthened the Food Science and Technology discipline in Nigeria and beyond.
