The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a serious warning and de-recognition to several schools following investigations into reported cases of examination malpractice during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024.
At the 78th meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee, WAEC took decisive action against schools found to be involved in unethical examination practices.
The council has highlighted the importance of upholding the integrity of the examination process and has promised strict consequences for institutions found guilty of facilitating malpractice.
WAEC, in a letter addressed to the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), named specific schools that have been either warned or de-recognized for their involvement in malpractice.
The committee’s decision serves as a stern reminder to educational institutions to maintain fair practices and ensure that their students have a chance to prove their abilities without external interference.
The decision, made public in late November 2024, underscores WAEC commitment to ensuring the credibility of its examinations. Schools included in the list face consequences ranging from warnings to outright de-recognition, a measure that may impact their ability to register students for future WAEC exams.
WAEC action aims to serve as a deterrent, urging schools to enforce stricter internal controls and prepare their students to succeed through legitimate means. Institutions are reminded to foster an atmosphere of integrity, as any compromise in the examination process could have long-lasting effects on both their reputation and their students’ future.
