UNN Celebrates 53rd Convocation: 11,143 Graduates Honored, Notable Nigerians Attend

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) marked its 53rd convocation ceremony over the weekend with notable dignitaries in attendance, including Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, and Chairman of the Governing Council, General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd). The event celebrated the academic achievements of 11,143 students who graduated with various degrees and diplomas.

Among the graduates, 195 earned first-class honors, 4,165 attained second-class honors (upper division), and 5,297 graduated with second-class honors (lower division). Additionally, 659 obtained third-class degrees, 22 received Pass degrees, 889 were unclassified, and 16 earned diplomas. Postgraduate achievements included 431 doctorate degrees, 848 master’s degrees, and 77 postgraduate diplomas.

One of the standout graduates was Daniel Iworiso-Markson, a former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Bayelsa State, who was awarded a doctorate degree. Reflecting on his journey, Iworiso-Markson expressed gratitude and fulfillment, having returned to complete his PhD over 20 years after initially shelving the opportunity.

“I had the opportunity of starting my academic journey as a PhD student in 2003, immediately after my master’s degree,” he said. “The late Professor Ike Nwosu, an icon and former Head of Department of Marketing at UNN, ignited my interest in pursuing a PhD in Public Relations. At the time, I told him PhD could wait as I was more focused on building my career and improving my economic status.”

Fast forward to 2024, Iworiso-Markson expressed a deep sense of accomplishment and honored the memory of Professor Nwosu. “Here I am today, filled with a deep sense of accomplishment to be part of the 53rd convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, for the award of higher degrees,” he stated.

He described his academic journey as challenging but transformative. “Through rigorous coursework, research endeavors, and experiential learning, I honed my critical thinking skills, cultivated my strengths, and prepared myself for the ever-evolving demands of the modern world,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to his lecturers, family, and friends, Iworiso-Markson added, “I am filled with gratitude for the countless individuals who have supported and inspired me along the way. As I embark on the next phase of my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned, the memories cherished, and the dreams yet to be realized.”

The convocation ceremony was not only a celebration of academic excellence but also a testament to resilience, growth, and the transformative power of education.
