The University of Lagos (UNILAG) took a significant step towards sustainability on Monday with the inauguration of solar-powered buses aimed at reducing emissions and promoting clean energy.
The university also revealed its newly updated logo, signaling its commitment to innovation and a greener future.
At a media parley in Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, unveiled the buses, which were donated by two of the university’s alumni. The donors, who own Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services, designed and contributed the buses as part of their efforts to promote sustainable public transportation.
“These buses will be used for public transportation,” Prof. Ogunsola said. “They are prepared for sustainable planning, using solar energy and can also be charged through electricity.”
The initiative is part of UNILAG’s broader goal to maintain its reputation for excellent air quality while addressing one of the significant sources of pollution: emissions from cars. Prof. Ogunsola emphasized that the introduction of the buses aligns with the university commitment to reducing carbon footprints and supporting environmentally conscious practices.
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor discussed the importance of the new logo, stating, “The old logo does not represent the brand of UNILAG. We want our partners and stakeholders to use the updated logo.” This change reflects UNILAG modernization and its forward-thinking approach to sustainability and global partnerships.
The inauguration marks a pivotal moment in the university ongoing efforts to contribute to a sustainable environment while enhancing its brand as an institution of innovation and progress.
