CPE speaks on the need for more awareness on Teenage Suicide
On March 30th 2024, the Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE) Facebook forum held a virtual program to discuss the topic: ‘Suicide Risk in Young People.’
The first speaker, Bunmi Akinmuntande said, “Suicide is a journey. As human beings we have a level of resilience that allows us to bounce back when we encounter any kind of trauma, but when you have a repeated trauma over and over again and you don’t have enough time to bounce back from that trauma eventually you get to a place where you can’t cope, you don’t have the resilience and then you give in.”
The second speaker, Abibo Berepele emphasized on the need to listen beyond what a person is saying and connect to the person in order to get to the root cause of what that person is complaining about as there can be triggers in the persons mind that is leading to those conversations.
Parents were further encouraged to look for other alternatives to correcting their kids as some of the traditional ways known to us can actually cause triggers that build up and explode both now and later on in life.
