Tinubu Appoints Aisha Garba as UBEC Executive Secretary

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, an accomplished international development expert, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), signaling a renewed push for education reform in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu underscored Garba’s pivotal role in advancing his administration’s vision for a transformed education system.

“Aisha Garba’s appointment reflects this administration’s commitment to delivering quality education for all Nigerian children. We believe her extensive expertise will drive our renewed hope agenda and make Nigerian children globally competitive,” Onanuga stated on behalf of the President.

Garba, a Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, boasts over 24 years of experience driving transformative educational programs across Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the USA, and the United Kingdom. Her 15-year tenure at the World Bank saw her lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of impactful education initiatives.

“She is uniquely positioned to tackle Nigeria’s educational challenges with her vast experience in fragile and conflict-affected regions. Her ability to connect governments, development partners, and communities will be invaluable,” Onanuga added.

In her acceptance remarks, Garba emphasized the critical role of education in national development, expressing her readiness to drive systemic reforms. “Education is the foundation for human and economic development, and I am honored to take on this role at such a critical time. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure Nigerian children have access to quality education,” she said.

Garba’s impressive track record includes significant contributions to Nigeria’s achievements in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). She has also worked extensively with global organizations such as the World Bank, the Department for International Development (DFID), and the Muslim Aid Organization.

Her academic credentials further reflect her readiness for the role. Garba earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Computer Studies from Petra American University in Jordan and holds a Master’s in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK. Her blend of academic and professional expertise positions her as a capable leader in addressing Nigeria’s basic education challenges.

With this appointment, Garba is expected to lead sustainable reforms within UBEC, bridging gaps in access, quality, and inclusivity to ensure Nigerian children are equipped for a competitive global future.
