A tragic swimming pool accident at Smiley Kids Montessori School, located in Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos, has claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl, Miss Raphaela Ogbodo. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, has sparked an investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education.
Following the incident, the school has been sealed off as authorities conduct a preliminary investigation to determine the root cause of the tragedy. Expressing grief over the loss, the Lagos State Government extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring such incidents do not recur.
The Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, emphasized the importance of compliance with safety regulations by schools and caregivers. “It is imperative for all school owners and caregivers to adhere strictly to safety standards to prevent accidents in our state,” Mojola stated.
The government has assured the public that further updates will be provided once the investigation is concluded.
