Ogun Teacher Under Fire After Student Dies from 162 Cane Strikes

A heartbreaking incident has unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, where a student identified as Ariyo has tragically died following an alleged severe punishment administered by a teacher.

Reports indicate that the teacher struck Ariyo with 162 strokes of the cane for reportedly breaking a dustbin.

Activist Adetoun shared the shocking details on Instagram on Friday, shedding light on the events that led to this tragic outcome.

According to her account, the teacher had brought a dustbin to the classroom, clearly instructing students not to break it. In a light-hearted manner, Ariyo reportedly responded, claiming the dustbin was purchased with the students’ funds, a comment that seemingly enraged the teacher.

Following the exchange, the teacher reported Ariyo’s remark to the principal, who then ordered that the student be punished. Acting on this directive, the teacher allegedly administered an excessive punishment of 162 cane strokes. It was during this brutal flogging that Ariyo collapsed, prompting concern among the school staff.

Adetoun further revealed that there was a significant delay in transporting Ariyo to a hospital for medical attention. Sadly, by the time he received care, it was too late; he was pronounced dead.

A senior police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident but was not authorized to provide details to the media. He stated that the situation had created considerable tension in the community, but police intervention helped to manage the unrest.

“We are on the matter; the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.

The tragic death of Ariyo has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about the disciplinary practices in schools, highlighting the urgent need for reforms to protect students from excessive punishment.
