The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has taken a decisive step to suspend the Zone B convention due to allegations of irregularities that have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
This bold move was announced by NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, in a statement highlighting the need for fairness and transparency.
Akinteye emphasized the suspension as a necessary measure to ensure the protection of all eligible students’ rights and to facilitate a transparent and equitable election process.
In a bid to address these concerns, he declared the formation of an impartial investigative committee to scrutinize the key allegations surrounding the convention.
The leadership of the NANS Senate has reiterated its dedication to upholding democratic values, transparency, and accountability. They have urged all stakeholders to trust the established process to ensure a just and credible election.
“The petition, dated October 12, 2024, with reference number NANS/VOL1/GA1/A215, highlights concerns raised by various Students’ Union Government Presidents and electoral aspirants within Zone B (South South is suspended). The grievances center around the transparency, inclusivity, and credibility of the convention and electoral process,” stated Akinteye.
In light of these developments, NANS has called for an immediate cessation of the electoral proceedings while a comprehensive investigation is undertaken to safeguard the integrity of the process.
“The National Association of Nigerian Students is built on democratic values and the sanctity of free and fair elections. It is crucial that NANS upholds these core principles at all levels,” the statement concluded.
