LASUED Lecturer Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Raping Student

A Lagos court has sentenced Kolawole Muyiwa, a part-time lecturer at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto-Ijanikin, to life imprisonment for raping a student.

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, February 27, 2025. In his ruling, he noted that while the convict was a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, the severity of the crime and his abuse of authority warranted the maximum punishment.

“As a part-time lecturer, you occupied a position of trust and authority which you abused. The victim was a student at the institution where you taught,” Justice Oshodi stated.

Allaboutschools gathered that the crime occurred on October 11, 2021, and Muyiwa was arraigned on October 6, 2023, pleading not guilty. However, during the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including testimonies from the victim, a lawyer and vice chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Badagry branch, Caroline Ibe, and the investigating police officer, Olufunke.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed the sentencing in a statement on Saturday, emphasizing that Muyiwa’s name would be entered into the state’s Sexual Offenders Register.

The case highlights the Lagos State government’s commitment to enforcing strict penalties for sexual offences and ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence.
