LASU Students Protest N260,000 Fee to Complete Outstanding Courses

Lagos State University (LASU) students are voicing their frustration over a N260,000 fee demanded by the university to register for outstanding courses.

Some of these students, who should have graduated over a decade ago, are accusing the institution’s management of unfair practices, claiming it has delayed their graduation and withheld their certificates.

One of the affected students, who spoke with SaharaReporters, explained that she should have graduated in 2010 but has been unable to do so due to unresolved administrative issues with her spill-over courses.

After 14 years of waiting, she remains unable to obtain her certificate, leaving her with limited opportunities for advancement.

“After several pleas, the school management eventually provided a platform for us to register, but shockingly, they pegged the fees at N260,000,” she shared.

According to the information posted on the university’s portal, students are required to pay N250,000 for a make-up examination and an additional N10,000 as an online processing fee.

The student continued, “This is too much, considering that we paid N47,000 as our school fees during our time. It is not our fault that the school did not resolve our issues up to this time. They caused the delay, so it is unfair for them to ask us to pay such a huge amount of money because of one course. I have missed a lot of opportunities since I could not tender my certificate.”

The issue reportedly affects hundreds of students, many of whom are struggling to afford the steep fee. They argue that the financial demand is unwarranted, especially as they feel the fault lies with the university for not resolving these registration issues sooner.

When contacted for comment, LASU spokesperson Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile expressed surprise upon learning that some students were experiencing such prolonged delays.

She clarified that while LASU policy does require spill-over students to pay for registration, she would investigate the specifics of the N260,000 charge and whether it aligns with the institution’s standard requirements for such cases.
