Lagos Government Orders Immediate Registration of Unapproved Private Schools

The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent directive requiring all unapproved and unregistered private schools in the state to immediately register with the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) to ensure compliance with educational standards.

Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized that this move is part of the state’s efforts to regulate and maintain high educational standards at the basic and secondary levels.

In a statement released on Sunday, Remi Abdul, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, clarified that registration is mandatory for all private schools in Lagos. He warned that failure to comply with the directive would result in sanctions.

“The rapid growth of private schools in the state makes it necessary for proper registration and documentation, ensuring effective monitoring and intervention,” Abdul explained during a briefing at the OEQA office in Alausa, Ikeja.

Starting Monday, January 13, 2025, unregistered schools will be able to submit their registration applications at the OEQA office. Abdul also outlined several benefits of registration, including state recognition, access to technical and financial support, and timely updates on emerging policies and initiatives from both state and federal education authorities.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring that all learners receive quality education, and the registration of private schools is a crucial step towards achieving this goal,” the statement concluded.
