In a bold move to improve access to quality healthcare for schoolchildren, the Oyo State government has officially enrolled 10,000 pupils from 90 schools across 18 local government areas into its health insurance scheme.
The initiative, launched at the Ibadan Civic Center, Idi-Ape, was spearheaded by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal, who emphasized the state commitment to ensuring that children learn in a conducive environment with sound health.
The programme is a collaboration between the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), aiming to provide public school pupils with affordable medical care.
Lawal urged OYSHIA to expand the program to all schools in the state and encouraged parents to take advantage of the scheme.
The Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Ms. Celine Lafoucriere, lauded the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward universal health coverage.
She noted that access to healthcare is not only a fundamental right but also a key driver of social and economic development, helping children focus on their education and break the cycle of poverty. UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government in ensuring that all children, especially those in hard-to-reach areas, receive healthcare coverage.
Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, applauded the collaborative effort between OYSHIA and OYOSUBEB, pledging her ministry’s full support for the scheme’s success. Similarly, OYOSUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, emphasized the board’s dedication to the well-being of pupils, ensuring they receive quality medical care without financial burdens.
OYSHIA Executive Secretary, Dr. Olusola Akande, highlighted the immediate impact of the program, with an additional 5,500 pupils set to be enrolled in the coming weeks.
He acknowledged UNICEF’s vital support in expanding community-based health insurance awareness and commended the SUBEB chairman for his leadership in keeping the initiative on track.
The launch event, attended by key stakeholders in education and healthcare, underscores Oyo State’s commitment to securing a healthier and brighter future for its students.
