Igbinedion University Breaks New Ground as CBT Centre Gains Approval for Midwifery Exams

Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, has reached a significant milestone with its Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre receiving approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for conducting final midwifery professional examinations.

This development was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, during the institution’s award ceremony for higher and honorary degrees held on Saturday, 30th November 2024. The newly approved CBT centre has already hosted its inaugural examination and is set to serve as a regional hub for other institutions.

According to Professor Ezemonye, this initiative underscores the university’s commitment to integrating digital solutions in academic and administrative processes.

Ezemonye stated, “The university has embarked on campus-wide digitalisation as a way of integrating information and communication technology within academic and administrative functions.”

In addition to the CBT centre’s approval, Professor Ezemonye revealed a significant increase in admission quotas across several medical programs, reflecting growing confidence in the university’s quality of education. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) increased the quota for Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from 120 to 150. The quota for Medical Laboratory Science increased from 75 to 150, while the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) increased the Nursing Science quota from 75 to 150. The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria also increased the quota for the Doctor of Pharmacy program from 150 to 200.

Ezemonye remarked, “These increases reflect the high quality of our training and the growing confidence of the respective regulatory bodies in the University’s medical programmes.”

During the ceremony, 138 postgraduate students received their degrees, comprising 45 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 77 Master’s degrees, and 16 Postgraduate Diplomas. The event also celebrated the graduation of 855 undergraduate students, including 45 first-class honours graduates. Professor Ezemonye expressed pride in the university’s growth and infrastructure, stating, “The institution is blazing the trail in quality education delivery and remains the most sought-after by admission seekers.”

The Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, urged graduates to harness creativity and innovation despite challenges. He inspired them to embrace opportunities globally, reinforcing the university’s vision for excellence.

The event was marked by notable highlights, including the conferment of an honorary doctorate degree (Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa) on Dr. Theresa Freeman Wang, a consultant gynaecologist at the Whittington Health NHS Trust, London. Additionally, Prof. Egle Lastauskiene of Vilnius University, Lithuania, delivered a thought-provoking convocation lecture. With this milestone, Igbinedion University continues to affirm its pioneering role in Nigerian higher education, bridging tradition and innovation for the benefit of students and society.
