Gunmen Assassinate University Professor in Asaba

Tragedy struck in Asaba, Delta State, on Friday night as gunmen assassinated Prof. Emeka Chukwuma, a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka.

Allaboutschools correspondent gathered that the 56-year-old professor, who was known for his routine weekend visits to his hometown, Umueji in Asaba, was killed in his residence at St. Bridges area of Umueji quarters.

“Prof. Emeka Chukwuma was assassinated in Asaba on Friday night. He is a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka, Anwai campus but later moved back to the Abraka campus after the conversion of Anwai campus to Dennis Osadebey University,” a source disclosed.

Speaking on the incident, a resident lamented, “Prof. Chukwuma usually comes home every weekend. It is unfortunate that he came back yesterday for his usual weekend and was assassinated in his place. As I speak to you now, Asaba is no longer safe. We are confused over the situation.”

Asaba has witnessed a surge in violent crimes, including killings and kidnappings, sparking widespread fear among residents. Many have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property in the city.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, but the tragic loss of Prof. Chukwuma has left the academic community and residents of Asaba in shock and mourning.
