Support has poured in for Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), following an alleged assault by a female student.
Former students of Dr. Okoye have taken to social media to express their admiration for his dedication and condemn the incident.
Ugochukwu Duoh, a former student, described Dr. Okoye as more than just a lecturer, calling him a mentor and a father figure.
“It is truly disheartening to see the level of disrespect directed at Dr. Chukwudi, a man who has been more than just a teacher—he has been a father, a mentor, and a guiding light to many of us in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies,” he wrote.
Duoh further emphasized the lecturer’s commitment to his students, expressing disappointment over the incident.
“To witness such an unfortunate incident is painful, especially knowing how much he has dedicated to shaping and uplifting students. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and should never be condoned,” he added, assuring Dr. Okoye of the continued support of his former students.
Another former student, Franklin Okechukwu Onwubiko, praised Dr. Okoye’s calm and reserved nature, calling him “one of the calmest, most brilliant, yet jovial lecturers in UNIZIK.” He strongly criticized the alleged assault, stating, “This attitude of the girl is so unwarranted and very repulsive.”
Onwubiko also suggested that the student might face serious consequences, noting that Dr. Okoye’s wife is a respected senior magistrate. However, he expressed hope that the lecturer’s forgiving nature as a “Man of God” might lead him to show mercy.
Similarly, Chinedu Collins Egemuka voiced his shock at the incident, describing Dr. Okoye as one of the best and most responsible lecturers he had encountered. “Wow, Doctor Okoye? Jesus, one of the best lecturers and responsible lecturers I know. She will see the result of her actions soon,” he wrote.
