FME Moves to Finalize National Anti-Bullying Policy, Pledges Safer Schools for Nigerian Students

In a decisive move to tackle bullying in schools, the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has advanced efforts to finalize the National Policy on Anti-Bullying in Nigerian Schools.

This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.

While addressing stakeholders at the policy finalization meeting, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, strongly condemned bullying as a serious issue with long-lasting emotional and psychological effects. She stated: “Bullying is a destructive behavior that can devastate students’ well-being. As a nation, we have a collective responsibility to ensure our schools are safe and supportive.”

The minister further stressed the urgency of implementing a comprehensive framework that not only addresses all forms of bullying but also fosters empathy, compassion, and accountability among students and school staff.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Director of Polytechnic, Dr. Ejeh Usman, reaffirmed the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on bullying. He emphasized that an enforceable policy is crucial in safeguarding students from victimization.

The event also featured Mrs. Obianuju Anigbogu, who delivered the vote of thanks, commending the minister and other stakeholders for their dedication to the cause.

She reassured attendees of the Ministry’s resolve to support students affected by bullying and violence, stating the need for evidence-based policies to drive real change.

Consultant Sunny Kulutuye presented an overview of the draft policy, outlining key focus areas, including learner-to-learner interactions, learner-to-staff relationships, and staff responsibilities in curbing bullying within school environments.

The meeting ended with a strong consensus on the need for swift action to finalize and implement the policy, reinforcing the Ministry’s determination to create a safer, more inclusive educational system for Nigerian students.
