The Federal Ministry of Education has debunked reports claiming that the Federal Government has scrapped Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) in favor of a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education system.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry clarified that no such decision has been made. The proposal discussed at the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) Meeting on February 6, 2025, was merely a policy suggestion aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s education system.
According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the proposal seeks to maintain the current 6-3-3 structure while making 12 years of education compulsory. A key component is the removal of external examinations between JSS and SSS, ensuring a smooth academic transition. However, this remains under deliberation.
To ensure an inclusive decision-making process, the Ministry will engage education policymakers, state governments, teachers, and parents in extensive consultations over the next eight months. A final decision will be made at the October 2025 NCE meeting.
The Ministry urges the public to disregard misleading reports, reaffirming that the government remains committed to policies that expand access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.
