Eight schools from seven states are set to compete for the grand prize of N6 million at the 2025 National Mathematics Tournament (NMT) finals, scheduled for Saturday at Eko Hotels, Lagos.
The competition, organised by the Maths4Life Foundation, aims to promote excellence in mathematics while providing opportunities for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
The schools competing in the finals include Epe Girls High School and Penny International School from Lagos; University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School, Edo; Bosdem College, Ogun; Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja; Graceland International School, Rivers; Little Scholars School, Kaduna; and Austica Memorial College, Anambra.
President of Maths4Life Foundation, Omoniyi Osuntuyi, explained that the N6 million prize will be shared among the top three winners, who will also receive trophies, medals, and certificates.
He emphasized that the tournament is designed to bridge the educational gap by offering resources, mentorship, and support to students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. According to Osuntuyi, the competition is not just about numbers but about fostering logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking—key attributes needed for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Admin Officer of the Foundation, Mopelola Ajetunmobi, highlighted the role of the tournament in inspiring students to explore STEM fields by engaging with professionals, mentors, and role models.
She also revealed future plans to integrate mathematics into mainstream media through reality television shows, films, and educational events to promote its relevance in daily life.
Since 2022, Maths4Life has organised the World Mathematics Tournament twice and conducted quarterly online PDT sessions with global participants.
Ajetunmobi reiterated that these initiatives help students apply mathematical theories and prepare them for the evolving demands of the STEM industry.
