Breaking: Nnamdi Azikiwe University Expels Student Over Assault on Lecturer

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has expelled Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, a student of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, over an assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

The decision was conveyed in an official statement issued by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor I. Modebelu, following the approval of the Student Disciplinary Committee’s (SDC) recommendations by the Acting Vice-Chancellor. The incident, classified as gross misconduct and a violation of Student Disciplinary Regulations (SDR) Regulation 4, led to the student’s immediate expulsion.

University’s Official Statement

According to the statement:

*”The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee on the case of your assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, which was found to be gross misconduct and a violation of the Students’ Disciplinary Regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR).

Consequently, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled, and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion takes immediate effect.”*

The expelled student has been instructed to vacate the university premises immediately and return any university property in their possession.

Institutional Response to Misconduct

The decision underscores UNIZIK’s zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, particularly acts of violence against staff or students. The disciplinary action serves as a warning to students regarding adherence to university regulations and the consequences of violations.

The announcement has been communicated to key university officials, including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, Librarian, Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and other relevant departments.

The incident has sparked discussions among students and faculty, with some calling for stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures to prevent future occurrences of similar acts within the institution.
