Blooming Greens School marked Nigeria’s 63rd independence on the 29th of September, 2023 in the school premises, located in Yaba, Lagos.
The Independence Day celebration with the theme “The Nigeria of my Dreams” had the presence of the CEO; Mrs. Susan Babatunde Yamah, The Head Teacher; Mr. Gboyega Fadare, The Deputy Head Teacher; Mr. Godson Osarenren, Staff and the pupils from the Early Years Foundation Stage (the preschool & Nursery) to the Key Stage and High School (Year 3 – 7) who were beautifully dressed representing various tribes in Nigeria like the Hausa/Fulanis, Igbo, Yoruba, TIV, Niger-delta and Edo.
The event kicked off with the Early Years showcasing their cultural heritage with folklore, songs, and dance. There were displays of Nigerian artifacts such as Coral beads, a Drum, Aso-oke, an African tambourine called Shekere, an African statue, and Nigerian food such as Kulikuli, groundnuts, Amala/Ewedu, Pounded Yam & Egusi soup, Ofada rice & sauce, Moi moi, Abacha, Garden eggs.
The Early Years concluded their presentations while the Key Stage commenced afterwards. The CEO, Mrs. Yamah gave her welcome address as she expressed her excitement about Nigeria at 63 irrespective of the current happenings in the country, stating that “Nigeria is our home, and a great country, and things will get better again”. She further reaffirmed the school’s commitment to the betterment of her pupils saying “Our business in Blooming Greens School is to ensure that your future is brighter and brighter than ours” and that the school must make sure that the pupils learn everything that will add value to them academically, socially, emotionally and health-wise.
The Deputy Head Teacher took to the stage and shared a bit of Nigerian history; the Colonial Era, Independence, and stories about various Heads of State in Nigeria. It was an interesting session as the pupils also displayed their intelligence on the history and politics of Nigeria.
There was a special rendition by the school choir. Other presentations on ways to greet in different tribes, storytelling, songs, and dance were delivered by pupils from Years 3 -6. The pioneer students of the High School, Year 7, made recitations on “The Nigeria of my Dreams”. They shared their dreams for Nigeria stating their desire to see a better Nigeria with no violence & insecurity, no corruption, no starvation, a Nigeria with free access to primary healthcare and education, a Nigeria where leaders are committed to the citizens, and a Nigeria where goals can be achieved.
The event ended with the closing speech & prayer by the Head Teacher, Mr. Fadare. He commended the pupils for their educative and intellectual performance. He also thanked their teachers for a job well done.
