In celebration of World Braille Day, the Lagos State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) organized a literacy competition on Saturday for visually impaired students at Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted, Surulere.
The event, aimed at promoting awareness of Braille as a vital communication tool, was spearheaded by the Directorate of Physically Challenged, led by Barr. Temitope Akinremi.
The competition, which featured Basic 5 pupils, showcased the exceptional reading and writing skills of the participants. Emerging as the winner, Mayokun Sanusi was rewarded with a brand-new typewriter. The first runner-up, Noah Lawal, received a Braille slate, while the second runner-up, Pelumi David, was presented with a collapsible mobility stick. Consolation prizes were also awarded to other participants.
Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan, MNSE, the State Chairman of NYCN, represented by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Damilola Kushimo, lauded the initiative.
He commended Barr. Akinremi for aligning with the administration’s focus on inclusivity and empowerment.
“This programme highlights our administration’s dedication to empowering young individuals across Lagos, irrespective of their status, ethnicity, or religion. We remain committed to advancing progress and inclusivity in our state,” Engr. Adigun stated.
The event was graced by dignitaries such as Leader Odulana, Leader Oreshile, Leader Rashidat, and the Coordinator of NYCN Surulere Local Branch, Comrade Tope Ajenifuja. Each took the opportunity to motivate the students and commend the Adigun-led administration for this impactful initiative.
Barr. Akinremi emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “World Braille Day reminds us of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in education. This competition is a step toward fostering confidence and skill development among visually impaired students.”
The initiative not only celebrated the capabilities of visually impaired students but also reinforced the importance of creating opportunities for every individual to thrive.
