OOU Breaks New Ground: Graduates to Receive Certificates and Transcripts Immediately at Convocation

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has announced a new initiative where graduates will receive their degree certificates and academic transcripts immediately after the convocation ceremony.

Allaboutschools correspondent gathered that this groundbreaking move, a first of its kind for the university, will commence at its 34th convocation, which peaks on Friday, January 31, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, made this announcement during a press conference on Thursday, emphasizing the institution’s drive to enhance efficiency and provide seamless support for its students. “The certificates are already signed and prepared, and they will be issued alongside transcripts and commemorative plaques during the convocation ceremony,” he stated.

This year’s convocation will witness the graduation of 6,209 undergraduates, including 5,793 regular and 416 part-time students. Additionally, 741 postgraduate students, comprising 571 PGD/Master’s graduates and 170 PhD recipients, will be conferred with their diplomas and degrees.

A key highlight is the significant rise in First Class honours graduates, with 115 students achieving this feat, a 16.16% increase from the 99 recorded in the previous session. In addition, 1,845 graduates will earn Second Class (Upper Division) honours, 3,044 Second Class (Lower Division), 688 Third Class, 35 Pass grades, and 66 unclassified honours for medical graduates.

The standout graduate of the year is Aisha Aanuoluwapo Dauda from the Department of Economics, who emerged as the overall best-graduating student with an impressive CGPA of 4.87.

This year’s convocation will also feature a lecture titled ‘TETFund and Educational Development in Nigeria: the History, the Treasures, and the Future’, to be delivered by the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arch Sunny Echono.

Beyond academics, OOU has recorded notable achievements in Artificial Intelligence, earning the prestigious title of ‘AI School of the Year’ at the 2024 Data Science Nigeria (DSN) annual boot camp. The award included a $1,000 prize in books.

In addition, two lecturers from the university won the inaugural Google Academic Research Awards for 2024, securing a research grant worth $60,000.

With these milestones, OOU is positioning itself as a leader in innovation and academic excellence in Nigeria’s education sector. This new initiative to issue certificates and transcripts at convocation further demonstrates its commitment to streamlining administrative processes and enhancing the graduate experience.
