The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. The announcement was made by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following FEC’s final 2024 meeting at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
The university, originally established in 1988 and operational since 1990, now bears the name of Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former military head of state who ruled from 1966 to 1975.
In the same address, the Minister announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved nationwide free transportation services for the holiday season.
“The Federal Government will commence a nationwide free train service from the 20th of December to the 5th of January 2025,” Idris disclosed.
He also mentioned that the Federal Executive Council will go on recess from December 18 to January 6, 2025.
This renaming follows a similar recent move where President Tinubu renamed the National Theatre after Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.
