Baze University Awards $20,000 Prize to Best Graduating Student

Baze University has celebrated a significant milestone at its 11th convocation ceremony.

The institution honour the academic accomplishments of 749 graduating students on its Abuja campus.

The event drew dignitaries, families, and friends who gathered to commend the Class of 2024, notably including 21-year-old Farid Aminu Hammayo, who emerged as the overall best graduating student with an impressive CGPA of 3.96 on a 4.0 scale.

Farid, hailing from the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, exemplified the university’s dedication to scholastic excellence.

In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Baze University founder, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, awarded him a $20,000 prize, acknowledging his hard work and dedication.

Expressing his gratitude, Farid thanked the university community and his family for their support, urging his fellow graduates to step into their roles as future leaders and innovators.

“Today, we celebrate our academic achievements, but we must also recognize the responsibilities that come with them. We are the future leaders, policymakers, and innovators of Nigeria,” he stated.

The ceremony also highlighted the achievements of postgraduate students, including Susan Chioma Obasi and Adeola Abiodun Ayoola, who both attained perfect CGPAs of 5.0. Their joint address reflected on their academic journeys, emphasizing resilience and determination.

“Today is not only a celebration of our academic achievements but also a testament to our resilience and determination. We have overcome obstacles, pushed boundaries, and surpassed expectations,” they remarked.

In recognition of their excellence, the university founder extended offers of employment or fully funded Ph.D. Programmes to both graduates.

Across various faculties, the convocation celebrated the graduation of numerous students: 38 from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, 120 from Computing and Applied Sciences, 48 from Engineering, 59 from Environmental Sciences, 141 from Law, and 343 from Management and Social Sciences. This cohort included 57 students who achieved First Class honors.

Prof. Kathleen Okafor, SAN, Acting Vice Chancellor, congratulated the graduates, highlighting Baze University’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing private institutions. She described the occasion as an “epoch-making day for our university and our graduates, a day to celebrate the acquisition of knowledge for the betterment of society,” reflecting the university’s mission to prepare students for societal contributions.

The event also paid tribute to the late Air Vice Marshal Muktar Mohammed for his societal contributions. Dr. Yusuf Baba-Ahmed, the university’s founder, expressed pride in the graduates’ achievements and emphasized the importance of continuous learning.

He also highlighted recent developments at the university, including a fully operational hospital and expanded academic programs.

Senator Y.D. Baba-Ahmed, Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, delivered a speech reflecting on the university’s growth and its commitment to educational equity. His remarks underscored the institution’s dedication to maintaining high standards within Nigeria’s educational landscape.

The ceremony was graced by notable guests, including Emir of Dutse, Hameem Nuhu Sanusi, and former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Chuka J. Odom, among others. Their presence added prestige to the event.

Chief Odom, in his commencement speech, commended Baze University’s role in shaping the future of Nigerian youth and encouraged the graduates to be agents of positive change.
