UI Students Breathe Sigh of Relief as Registration Extended

The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced a crucial extension for students to finalize their registration, pushing the deadline to midnight next Tuesday. This decision, captured in an internal memorandum dated Friday, September 20, was signed by the registrar, Saliu G. O., and has provided a much-needed reprieve for students facing the looming threat of dropping out due to financial constraints.

Originally, the fee payment portal and course registration were set to close at midnight on Friday. However, following a pivotal meeting with the students’ union on Thursday, the university decided to extend the deadline. This move aims to alleviate the “uncertainty and fear of dropout” that had gripped the student body. “To this end and in furtherance to the agreements reached with the leadership of the Students Union on Thursday, 19 September, 2024, students who are yet to complete their registration now have till 12 midnight of Tuesday, 24 September to complete their registration,” the memo stated.

Adding a layer of financial relief, the university confirmed the receipt of funds from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for 3,283 students whose loan applications were recently approved. These students have been instructed to finalize their registration by utilizing the wallets set up for them on the school’s portal. The memo emphasized, “Affected students are therefore directed to go online and complete their registration by paying through the wallets created for them on the portal.”

This development underscores the university’s commitment to supporting its students through financial challenges, reflecting a broader trend in educational institutions striving to accommodate students during economically challenging times.
