Tragedy As 17 Students Burnt To Death, Several Others Injured

A tragic fire incident in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students, leaving 17 others injured.

Allaboutschools correspondent gathered that the inferno, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was reportedly ignited by burning corn stalks that spread to the shelter where the pupils were sleeping.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the fire initially broke out around midnight and was briefly extinguished. However, at approximately 2:00 a.m., flames flared up again, rapidly engulfing the dormitory where about 100 pupils, aged between 10 and 16 years, were sleeping.

According to a report, Malam Aliyu Khalifa, the teacher in charge of the students, tearfully described the terrifying moment. “I suddenly heard shouts of ‘fire, fire!’ and rushed outside to find about 30 pupils struggling to escape,” he said. Despite desperate attempts by locals to contain the blaze, the raging fire proved uncontrollable.

Efforts to save lives were hampered by a faulty firefighting truck, leading to a delay in the response of the Zamfara State Fire Service. Volunteers and police officers, however, managed to rescue some pupils before the flames consumed the structure.

Confirming the fatalities, Khalifa mourned the loss, stating, “It is an immense loss, but we accept it as the will of Allah.” Meanwhile, Usman Salis, a director at the Almajiri school, praised Khalifa’s dedication to the pupils’ welfare and described the deceased as martyrs. “Their deaths are painful, but we find solace in knowing they are now in Jannatil Firdausi,” he said.

Principal Fire Superintendent Abdulmudallib Muhammad Galadi of the Zamfara State Fire Service confirmed that an emergency call was received at 2:25 a.m. but cited technical issues as the reason for their delayed response.

The tragedy has plunged Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State’s second-largest city and a key commercial hub, into mourning. Heartbroken residents, school authorities, and government officials have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives, as the community struggles to come to terms with the devastating incident.
