Seven Unilorin Lecturers Named Among World’s Top Scientists

Seven academic staff members from the University of Ilorin have been recognized as among the top 2% of leading scientists globally, reaffirming the institution’s reputation as a citadel of academic excellence.

This recognition was published in the latest Elsevier data repository on September 16, 2024, showcasing the university’s commitment to world-class academic practice.

The distinguished scholars include:

Prof. Kayode John Oyewumi, a former Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, from the Department of Physics.

Prof. Musa Toyin Yakubu, the immediate past Dean of Student Affairs, from the Biochemistry Department.

Dr. George Adewale Adeniyi, a one-time UNILORIN Researcher of the Year, from the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Mufutau Opeyemi Bello and Dr. Folorunso M. Ajide, both from the Department of Economics.

Dr. Joseph Bamidele Awotunde from the Department of Computer Science.

Dr. Melody Okereke from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Elsevier database is described as a “publicly available database of top-cited scientists that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, and citations to papers in different authorship positions.”

Reacting to this significant accolade, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, expressed his delight at the favorable rating of the scholars. Speaking through the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, he congratulated the honorees, stating, “Home and abroad, every member of the University community should contribute to the University’s greatness.”

Prof. Egbewole further emphasized the importance of this recognition, saying, “The latest Elsevier ranking of the University’s scientists as being among the top researchers at the global level has moved the University closer to becoming the topmost Nigerian University, one of the best ten in Africa and among the leading 500 universities at the global level.”

He encouraged other staff members to emulate the dedication and excellence demonstrated by these seven lecturers, urging them to strive for similar achievements to help the institution reach its goal of being the best.
