Rivers University Abolishes Course Rep System

The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), located in Iwofe, Rumuluomeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, has officially abolished the course leader/representative system.

This announcement was part of a broader initiative to address rampant misconduct among lecturers, which has been tarnishing the university reputation.

A special release dated August 28, 2024, and made public on Friday, outlined the Senate stern warning to all lecturers to cease illegal practices post-examinations.

The university administration is taking a hard stance against extortion, including charging students for late book purchases, inflating textbook prices, and arbitrarily fixing practicals to extract additional funds from students.

The statement, signed by the Acting Registrar, Dr. C.A. Ajie, and disseminated to key university stakeholders, emphasized the urgency of the situation.

“These ugly acts have portrayed the school in bad light, as well as attracting negative publicity,” the Senate remarked, expressing regret over the misconduct that has persisted in various departments and faculties with impunity.

To further protect students, the Senate announced that all textbooks must be sold at prices approved by the university, with plans to establish a book review committee soon.

They also encouraged students to come forward with information regarding any misconduct, assuring them that reports would be treated confidentially.

The IAUE Senate concluded with a firm warning: lecturers who fail to comply with these directives will face stiffer disciplinary measures.

This bold initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a more transparent and accountable academic environment at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
