Oke-Ona United, UBE Primary Schools Win Nestlé for Healthier Kids Quiz Competition

Oke-Ona United School from Ilugun Elega in Ogun State and UBE Primary School Pasali in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have emerged as the champions of the 2024 Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) quiz competition.

This event showcased the remarkable talents of students who excelled in demonstrating their understanding of essential topics such as nutrition, hydration, physical activity, and sustainability—key pillars of the N4HK initiative.

Victoria Uwadoka, the Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria, highlighted the significance of the N4HK initiative, which aims to empower 50 million school children globally to lead healthier lives by 2030.

“This programme is Nestlé’s flagship initiative dedicated to fostering healthy habits from an early age,” she stated.

In Nigeria, the initiative includes a school-based nutrition education and environmental sustainability program designed to equip children with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions regarding their health and the environment.

The N4HK programme currently benefits 35 schools across Nigeria, with 20 in Ogun State, 10 in the FCT, and 5 in Lagos State. Uwadoka explained that the nutrition quiz, which has been an integral part of the N4HK program since its establishment in 2020, serves to enhance students’ recall and retention of lessons learned.

This year, the competition saw 135 enthusiastic children competing for the title of 2024 N4HK quiz champion.

The finals in Ogun State were held in Abeokuta, where Oke-Ona United School took first place, followed by St. Peters Primary School, Siun in second, and China Nigeria Friendship School Igbesa, Ado-Odo, Ota in third.

In the FCT, UBE Primary School Pasali claimed victory, with Science Primary School (SPS), Abaji in second place and Science Primary School Kwali in third. All participating schools showcased remarkable dedication to the principles of healthy living.

Uwadoka emphasized the initiative’s long-term vision: “By focusing on children’s health and well-being, Nestlé for Healthier Kids aims to create a lasting positive impact on future generations. Equipping children with healthy habits early on can have profound effects on individuals, families, and communities.” The winners will receive awards that include a basketball court with player jerseys for the first place, a desktop computer for the second place, and a table tennis court with a complete kit for the third place.

Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, the Executive Chairman of Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, commended the efforts of all involved, stating, “Your tireless efforts have made a remarkable impact on the educational landscape of Ogun State.” He acknowledged Nestlé’s unwavering commitment to education and its support in creating a conducive learning environment.
