NYSC Demobilizes 54 Unqualified Graduates from UNICAL

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has demobilized 54 “graduates” from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) who were illegally mobilized for service.

This announcement came from the NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, who emphasized the importance of ensuring that only qualified individuals receive the certificate of national service.

The announcement, made in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, highlighted the ongoing efforts by the NYSC to combat fraudulent practices in the mobilization process.

Ahmed revealed that an additional 19 candidates who had registered online were also prevented from participating in the service, while four certificates of national service linked to other offenders were not issued.

This latest action follows the recent voiding of 101 certificates, bringing the total number of invalidated credentials to 178.

Ahmed praised UNICAL’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, for her proactive measures in identifying and reporting the unqualified graduates. He recounted a troubling incident in which a bread seller was previously mobilized alongside legitimate graduates, revealing systemic issues that need addressing.

“The Vice-Chancellor came forward, expressing concern over names that should not have been included on the list of graduates,” Ahmed stated, commending her commitment to transparency. He reaffirmed NYSC’s dedication to sanitizing the mobilization process, emphasizing that any lapses from educational institutions reflect on their management’s integrity.

In response to these events, Ahmed called for heightened collaboration with heads of corps-producing institutions and relevant stakeholders to eliminate such malpractices. He also urged employers to rigorously verify the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented during recruitment processes.
