In a heart-wrenching video circulating on social media, Sham’unu Ishaq, a first-class graduate from Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University in Katsina State, shares the harsh reality of life after graduation.
Despite achieving top honors with a Bachelor of Science (Education) in Biology on July 5, 2023, Ishaq remains unemployed, relying on street hawking to make ends meet.
“I graduated and had no job and I started hawking pure water sachets for survival,” Ishaq explained in the video seen by Allaboutschools, capturing the struggles he faces daily. A copy of his results displayed in the video confirms his outstanding academic achievement, yet he finds himself hustling on the streets, selling sachets of water to scrape together an income.
Ishaq paints a vivid picture of the bleak job market in Katsina.
“Here in Katsina, there is nowhere to even do something to improve my life,” he said, adding that his earnings from sachet water sales are barely enough to meet his daily needs. “The selling of the sachet water business is not even enough. Sometimes the only thing I do with the money is to eat from it; I can’t save anything.”
In a direct appeal, Ishaq pleaded with Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umar Radda, as well as the broader Nigerian public for assistance.
“As he can see, I graduated from university with no job, and poverty is even trying to kill me,” he stated, describing his financial burdens and responsibilities. “This pure water hawking is the only business I relied on for survival for now.”
Hoping for a lifeline, Ishaq sent a heartfelt message to fellow Nigerians: “I need help, not necessarily from the state government alone but from all Nigerians, be it south, east, north, or west, I just need help.” Emphasizing his readiness to work, he added, “I can do any kind of job.”
Ishaq’s situation highlights the critical unemployment issues facing many Nigerian graduates, as high-achieving young people grapple with the challenge of finding stable work amid a sluggish economy.
