Nigerian Air Force Officer Makes History, Wins International Award at RAF College Cranwell

Flying Officer David Sangokoya of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been honoured with the International Sword of Honour for 2023 at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell (RAFCC) in the United Kingdom.

This accolade is awarded annually to the most outstanding international cadet, marking Sangokoya as a standout among peers from around the world during the Modularized Initial Officers’ Training (MIOT) Course 22, which ran from March to September 2023.

The significance of this award is amplified by the fact that Flying Officer Sangokoya is the first African to receive this recognition as a result of both his personal dedication and the high standards upheld by the Nigerian Air Force on the global stage.

His Royal Highness, William, the Prince of Wales, presented the award on behalf of King Charles III during the Royal Graduation on 12 September 2024.

In a congratulatory message, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), praised Flying Officer Sangokoya for his focus, dedication, and hard work. “This prestigious recognition is a testament to the officer’s focus, dedication and hard work throughout his training,” he stated.

Air Marshal Abubakar also extended his gratitude to Sangokoya’s family, acknowledging their crucial support and encouragement, which he believes contributed significantly to the officer’s success. He emphasized that such accomplishments not only elevate the NAF’s reputation but also bring pride to the Nigerian nation as a whole.

Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, expressed similar sentiments, highlighting the bright spotlight this achievement casts on both the NAF and the country’s burgeoning presence in international military circles.
