Nation building: FG urged to prioritise education sector

Members of the Apostolic Church Grammar School, Old Students Association, Orishigun, Ketu, have urged the federal and state governments to address the deplorable state of education in Nigeria.

According to them, education remains the bedrock of development in any society and should be given top priority.

The old students of the school, who celebrated the 60th anniversary of their alma-mater at the school compound weekend, expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives to meet again after graduation many years ago.

Speaking with newsmen, the old students took turns to express satisfaction over the foundation that was accorded them in the past, stressing that all hands must be on deck to bring back the lost glory.

The newly sworn-in elected President of the Apostolic Church Grammar School Old Students’ Association, TACGSOSA, Ketu, Barrister Solomon Alabi, an 1981 set, called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to accord priority and increased budgetary allocation to education sector for quality teaching and learning.

Alabi, however, expressed confidence in the administration of Tinubu to revamp the education sector in due course.

He lamented the poor funding and neglect of the education system in the country over the years by subsequent administrations.

According to him, a critical sector like education requires adequate funding to develop the human capacity needs of the nation.

Alabi stressed the need for more funding of education in Nigeria, charging the Federal Government to adopt strategies such as reviewing the curriculum of colleges and faculties of education and appointing professional educators in education administration positions.

“It is pathetic to think that the foundation of the future is not well funded. We know that less than 20 per cent of the budget of the whole nation goes to education. So I will like to see more funding to aid infrastructure – physical and technological, train and empower teachers, increase remuneration, and curriculum review, among others.
