NANS to Police: Release Detained Protesters Within 24 Hours or Face Nationwide Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has sharply criticized the recent arrests of peaceful protesters across several states, including Akure, Kaduna, Jos, Kano, and others.

In a bold move, NANS has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Nigeria Police Force, demanding the immediate release of all detained student leaders and protesters.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the NANS President of the Senate, Comrade Henry Okunomo, the association urged the governors of the affected states to take swift action to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader crisis.

The statement emphasised the constitutional rights of the protesters, citing Sections 40 and 39 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee the rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

NANS has set forth clear demands:

  1. The immediate release of all detained protesters and student leaders.
  2. A firm commitment from authorities to respect the citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.
  3. Assurance of protection for students’ rights to protest and express themselves without fear of intimidation or arrest.

The association’s ultimatum highlights the growing tension between student activists and law enforcement, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these grievances to maintain peace and uphold democratic principles.
