On Monday, January 13, 2025, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, held her first official meeting with the 35th Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) Executive Council since their inauguration in December 2024. The meeting, facilitated by the Acting Dean of the Students Affairs Division, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room on the 6th floor of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building.
The student leaders expressed their gratitude for Prof. Olatunji-Bello’s responsive leadership and tabled several requests on behalf of the student body. In response, the Vice-Chancellor engaged in a constructive dialogue, addressing key concerns and reaffirming her commitment to the welfare of LASU students.
“I encourage all students whose applications to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have been approved to proceed with registration for the new academic session, as the university has already received their payments,” she stated. Prof. Olatunji-Bello also urged students who had not yet applied for the scheme to do so, emphasizing its importance as a right available to every Nigerian student.
On the contentious issue of tuition fees, Prof. Olatunji-Bello reassured the students that LASU remains one of the most affordable universities in Nigeria and that her administration has no immediate plans to increase tuition fees. She, however, called on students to support the university by ensuring timely payment of their fees.
“Despite our affordability, we have no intention to increase school fees at this time. However, we urge students to fulfill their obligations by paying fees on time to help the university maintain its operations,” she emphasized.
The Vice-Chancellor also advised the student leaders to remain steadfast in upholding the university’s peaceful environment, cautioning them against external influences that could disrupt the institution’s harmony.
The meeting was attended by other members of the university management and staff, underscoring the administration’s commitment to fostering an open and collaborative relationship with the student body.
