Lagos State University (LASU) has officially commenced its postgraduate programmes in Peace and Security Studies with an orientation ceremony for the first cohort of students on Saturday, January 8, 2025.
The event, held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, marked the beginning of five distinct programmes: Academic Ph.D., Professional Doctorate, Academic Masters, Professional Masters, and Postgraduate Diploma.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, congratulated the pioneering students, describing their admission as the start of a transformative journey in academic excellence, critical thinking, and cutting-edge research.
He emphasized that the Centre for Peace and Security Studies would serve as a hub for addressing key security challenges, including banditry, cattle rustling, and terrorism.
Director of the Centre, Prof. Adewunmi Falode, highlighted its multidisciplinary approach, noting that every faculty at LASU is represented in the programmes. He commended the Vice-Chancellor for her vision and commitment to the Centre’s establishment, stating, “You are lucky to be pioneers of this first-of-its-kind Centre in LASU.”
Prof. Ibrahim Olateju, Dean of the Postgraduate School, assured students of LASU’s efficiency in academic timelines, emphasizing that all programmes would run as scheduled.
He also noted the university’s technology-driven learning system, which allows students to choose between physical and virtual lectures and examinations.
Other key speakers included Prof. Olugbenga Akindoju, Dean of the Faculty of Education, who briefed students on LASU’s grading system, and representatives from the Registrar’s Office, Bursary, Library, and ICT departments. The event was attended by past and present deans, heads of departments, professors, and senior academic and non-academic staff.
The launch of these postgraduate programmes further strengthens LASU’s role as a leading institution in research and policy development on peace and security in Nigeria.
