Lagos State Government Increases School Boarding Fees

The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a significant increase in the boarding fees for public schools, a decision that has sent ripples of concern through communities already grappling with economic challenges.

The fee was increased from N35,000 to N100,000 per term, marking an almost 300% rise, set to take effect with the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic session.

The directive was communicated through a circular issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

Olufemi Asaolu, the Director of Basic Education Services, who signed the circular on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, conveyed the government’s decision unequivocally.

“I have the directive of the Honourable Commissioner to inform all public boarding house schools in Lagos State that the state government has approved the review of the boarding fee payable in all public boarding house schools in Lagos state. The new approved fee is One Hundred Thousand Naira (100,000) only. I am further directed to inform you that no additional fees of any form should be collected by the schools.”

The announcement comes at a time when parents are already feeling the pressure of rising prices of essential goods, including books and other educational materials.

As families brace themselves for the reopening of schools on 15th September 2024, this fee hike adds another layer of financial burden, and many are expressing concerns about the affordability of education amid the current economic climate.

The government’s decision has sparked a heated debate, with some stakeholders questioning the timing and necessity of such an increase, especially as the country continues to navigate economic instability. The administration, however, maintains that the revised fees are part of broader efforts to improve the quality of education and facilities in public schools.
