Lagos State Gov Champions Innovation in Tertiary Education at UNILAG 60th Anniversary

In a spirited address at the 60th Anniversary Celebration and Sixth Alumni Public Lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Engineering, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu articulated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality and relevance of tertiary education in the state.

“Today, at the 60th Anniversary Celebration and Sixth Alumni Public Lecture of the University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering, I emphasized our commitment to ensuring that tertiary education in Lagos State remains relevant and globally competitive through innovative ideas and practical knowledge,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

Highlighting the strides made during his first term, the governor revealed significant advancements in expanding the state’s higher education landscape.

“During my first term, we established two state-owned universities: the Lagos State University of Technology and the University of Education. Next year, there is a plan to launch the University of Medical Sciences, which will bring the total to four state universities,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu underscored education as a central pillar of his administration’s THEMES+ agenda, stating, “Education is a priority pillar in our THEMES+ agenda and we are serious about it.” He also recognized the Faculty of Engineering at UNILAG for its academic excellence, emphasizing the need for practical application of knowledge.

“UNILAG’s Faculty of Engineering has become a beacon of theoretical excellence, and it is important that we support them so they can provide students with hands-on experience through practical work opportunities.”

The governor’s remarks reflect a comprehensive strategy aimed at fostering a robust educational framework that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing them for the competitive global landscape.
