LAGOS 2024: FASU Commends LASU Stellar Preparations for 11th All Africa University Games

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) conducted a final inspection visit to Lagos State University (LASU) on August 16, 2024, ahead of the much-anticipated 11th All Africa University Games, set to take place from September 20 to 29, 2024.

This year’s Games will hold special significance as it marks the first time the event will be co-hosted by LASU and the University of Lagos, promising an unforgettable showcase of athletic talent across the continent.

The inspection, led by FASU Secretary-General Ms. Peninnah Kanenge, brought together key figures from various university sporting bodies, including Mr. Ibrahim Tank Shuaibu, President of the West African University Games (WAUG), and Dr. Bawa Mohammed, President of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) and Chairman of the Organising Committee.

Their visit commenced promptly at 9:20 a.m., greeted by a warm reception from LASU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Boyo, and other members of the Local Organising Committee.

The day’s itinerary featured a thorough inspection of the university’s state-of-the-art sports facilities. From the newly upgraded basketball, volleyball, and handball courts at the Sports Centre to the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, the delegation was impressed by the level of preparation.

The officials also toured the students’ hostel, which will accommodate around 1,800 athletes and officials, as well as the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre designated for dining.

Further inspections took the team to the Academic Resource Centre, where indoor events such as Chess, Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo are set to unfold. The visit culminated in a meeting with the Local Organising Committee, where Prof. Boyo expressed the universities’ commitment to delivering a successful and transformative Games experience.

Dr. Mohammed praised LASU’s preparedness, stating, “After our inspection, the two universities, especially LASU, did not fall our hands. We have seen more than we expected.” In a show of confidence, Ms. Kanenge echoed these sentiments, highlighting the exceptional commitment from both universities’ management, which has set the stage for an extraordinary display of sportsmanship and African unity.
