Could you please introduce yourself?

My name is Adenubi Taiwo Gift, and I’m honoured to share my academic journey with you.

What’s your course of study?

I studied Accounting at Covenant University.

Could you share with us the secret of your academic excellence?

While I do not consider it a secret, I attribute my success to God’s guidance throughout my academic journey, starting from my 100 level to my final year. Staying focused, determined, committed, and hardworking were crucial elements in achieving my goals.

Could you tell us about some of your most significant academic achievements during your studies and any challenges you faced while maintaining your first-class status?

During my time at the university, I had the privilege of leading various teams on group projects and serving as a special member of the Nigerian Universities Accounting Students’ Association (NUASA) Executive Committee. I also completed the ATSWA exams, becoming a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Although I encountered difficulties understanding some courses, with God’s help and consistent learning, I overcame these challenges.

Describe a research project or major assignment you completed during your degree. What was your role, and how did you contribute to its success?

I conducted a research project under supervision on the Impact of IFRS Education on Accounting graduates, focusing primarily on their overall understanding of specific IFRSs.

How did you manage your time effectively to balance coursework, projects, and any extracurricular activities to achieve a first-class degree?

To balance my coursework, projects, and extracurricular activities, I prioritized scheduling, made to-do lists, and sacrificed other activities to focus on academics. I actively engaged in extracurriculars and volunteering, and preparing for professional exams like ATS and ICAN significantly enhanced my understanding of relevant accounting courses.

Could you provide an example of a complex problem you encountered during your studies and how you approached solving it?

Balancing school work, accounting professional exams, and extracurriculars was challenging, but with proper planning and scheduling, I managed to navigate successfully.

In what ways did your family support or influence your academic journey, and how did it impact your ability to maintain a first-class standing?

My family provided spiritual, financial, emotional, and physical support throughout my academic journey. Their encouragement and constant communication motivated me to maintain my first-class standing. I recall my dad’s motivational words in Yoruba, “ENÍ BÁ FÉ MU OYIN INÚ APÀTA, KÒ NÍ WO ENU AKÉ,” which truly inspired me. I am indeed grateful to my parents.

What is your post-graduation goal? How do you see your first-class academic background contributing to achieving this goal?

My immediate post-graduation goal is to complete my professional exams and become a chartered accountant, then, with God’s help, secure a position in one of the Big 4 accounting firms. My first-class degree would undoubtedly contribute to achieving this goal.

What can you say about your alma mater?

First, I give kudos to my secondary school, Landmark College, Ikorodu, for laying a solid academic and moral foundation for me. I commend the school management and the dedicated teachers for their excellence. Additionally, Covenant University is an exceptional institution. The ‘TOTAL MAN CONCEPT (TMC)’ and leadership courses have shaped my understanding of true leadership and challenged me to become a leader. I am grateful for the opportunity to connect and relate with amazing minds, both lecturers and students. Covenant University is truly the birthplace of Kings and Queens.
