Members of the Concerned Parents and Educators Initiative have been urged by Mr. Fela Durotoye, to not only get involved in reforming the education sector but to also seek ways of getting others involved.
Mr. Fela Durotoye during his speech stated that “when custodians arise in the education sector greatness will occur. He added that the role of reforming the sector must not be left to the government alone everyone must “get involved, stay involved and get many people as possible involved ’’ in the process.
He further called on people to invest in teachers, endorse scholarships for teachers, train teachers and adopt teachers. And also values must be inculcated into children through quality education.
This discussion was the focus of the Save Education in Nigeria dialogue webinar held on Thursday 4th of March 2021. The theme for this edition is “Preparing Teachers for Education Reform”
Reviving the value of education and proper training of teachers was one of the key points highlighted as the solution to some of the problems affecting the sector.
Mrs. Lai koiki , spoke about how teachers are reformers and they must take the cause seriously for the betterment of our nation.
During the panelist session moderated by Mrs Morenike St Michael, Dr MO Adefeso-Olateju, a member of the four-man panel stated that “it is critical to center teachers on education because teachers are the most important variables that influence students”
She added that the standard of education must be improved in both public and private schools. It is a civic responsibility and actions must be taken to reform the sector because it is in a poor state.
Mrs Angela Ajala also called for the improvement of learning patterns in schools and also for teachers to be well trained. She added that the education sector must be developed for the progress of society.
According to Dr Pearl Onukwugha “Teachers are change agents”. No reform can occur without us seeing teachers as change agents. She added that the sector needs to leverage technology.
Dr Mika`ii Ibrahim Barau in his speech stated that “school is the most important social institution and when the school functions well others will work well”
He added that lack of investment, attention, and planning affects the growth of the education sector.
Mrs Folashade Adefisayo the commissioner for education Lagos state in her speech stated that truly the sector is facing some problems but everyone has to go for solutions instead of hammering on the problems. she also pointed that the leadership of every school is key to reformation.
She added that the Curriculum and teaching methods must be reviewed.
Mrs Ronke Soyombo Special adviser to Ogun state Governor on primary/secondary and technical education while giving her remarks stated that there is a need for a good round table discussion to review educational policy and that correct values must be reinstated to the education sector.
Mrs Soyombo also pointed out that teachers must be well trained and the process of recruitment must be professional done. she advised that all hands must be on deck to solve problems in the education sector.
Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, the honorable commissioner of education Oyo state. Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, during his speech, spoke about teachers and the quality of education in Oyo state.
The program was well attended by committed and passionate Nigerians such as Mr Fela Durotoye who was the keynote speaker for the day, Mr Tonye Cole the chairman of the day, the commissioner for education Lagos State, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, the commissioner of education Oyo state Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, Special adviser to Ogun state governor on primary/secondary and technical education Mrs Ronke Soyombo, the Chairperson APEN, Mrs. Lai Koiki as well as a distinguished array of panelists. Dr. Mo Adefeso-Olateju, Dr Mika`Ibrahim Barau, Mrs Angela Ajala, and Dr Pearl Onkwugha.
