FG Unveils New Curriculum, Mandates Skill Acquisition for Graduates

The federal government of Nigeria has unveiled a new curriculum that mandates students to graduate with at least two skills.

This groundbreaking initiative was announced by the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, during the 68th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

The theme of the meeting, “Innovation, Digital Technology Entrepreneurship: Tools for Educational and National Development in the 21st Century,” set the stage for the announcement.

Prof Mamman emphasized that the new curriculum is meticulously designed to blend knowledge, skills, and values at both Basic and Senior Secondary Education levels.

“The curriculum is crafted to ensure students possess skills that seamlessly connect with the economy, fostering a productive life post-graduation,” he stated.

Highlighting the urgency, Mamman noted the global challenge of outdated educational curriculums amid technological disruptions across industries, including education itself.

“A well-designed and effective curriculum is pivotal for sustainable development, quality, and relevance of education. This is why our administration prioritizes the institutionalization of curriculum development in education,” he declared.

The ministry Education Transformation Agenda, spearheaded by President Buhari, aims to revamp the education sector to ensure quality learning, skill development, and equitable access for all. Prof Mamman reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding international protocols and treaties to protect learners, educators, and educational facilities.

Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, asserted that nations seeking growth must embrace creative ideas, entrepreneurship, and digital technology.

“To address the challenges of technological advancements, our educational system must evolve to meet societal needs and aspirations,” Sununu advocated.

Furthermore, Muntari Mohammed, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, stressed the importance of digital literacy as a core component of the curriculum. “Our leadership is unwavering in its focus to ensure stability in the education sector,” he affirmed.
