FG Raises Corps Members Monthly Allowance to ₦77,000

In a significant development for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Federal Government has approved an increase in their monthly allowance to ₦77,000, effective July 2024.

This decision marks a substantial rise from the previous allowance of ₦33,000 and is part of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members across the country.

Caroline Embu, speaking on behalf of the NYSC, explained the rationale behind this increase, stating, “The increment was in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.”

This adjustment reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to align the allowances of corps members with the national minimum wage standards.

Prior to this change, the monthly allowance for corps members had been set at ₦33,000, following an increase from ₦19,800 in 2020.

This earlier adjustment came shortly after the signing of a new minimum wage bill that established the national minimum wage at ₦30,000.

The recent approval of the increased allowance follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law, which concluded months of negotiations involving government authorities, labor unions, and the private sector.

This new legislation was enacted at The State House in Abuja, shortly after the National Assembly passed the Minimum Wage Act, 2019, which raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

This latest development is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of corps members, providing them with enhanced financial support as they engage in service to their communities across Nigeria.
