“Burning The Night Candle” (Reading Into The Night), Does This Really Matter Anymore Today?

Growing up as a child in a systematic environment like the typical African home, it is part of the culture for parents to encourage you to read up on things learnt in school during the day, this include easier assimilation of reading at night.  Infact, parents believe the night period is one that comes with the necessary calm and serene conditions to properly do robust reading and learning. For some, this helped to read without distractions from friends and daily chores.  In another way, it helped to instill discipline in planning at an early stage of life, this would eventually be important in achieving the daunting tasks of accomplishment in life. However, what we have today is a large influx of learning aides which in turn have substituted the conventional way of learning including “Burning The Night Candle”. Everyone heavily involved in bringing up a child have now learnt to embrace this changes that came about as a result of globalization.

“Only Parents who are educators still protect these principles, generally, modern day parents now rely on learning aides like video recordings, toys and storybooks, hereby putting undue pressure on classroom teachers” – Pelumi.

“Infact, these modern parents rely on lesson teachers as a substitute, this is due to uncontrollable circumstances unfortunately” – Ayo

Having established that there has been a change to learning in recent times, is it okay to discard our conventional reading technique of “burning the night candle” or can we say it should be safe to combine it with the new changes, one thing is certain, it is purposely to give the child an edge in the academic environment, in a world of proper knowledge application. However, it is important to note that, children are changing in how they assimilate and how they apply learning.
