Lagos State Boosts Child Protection Efforts with Workshop for Headteachers, principals

In a bid to strengthen its child protection policies, the Lagos State Government recently held a two-day Safeguarding and Child Protection Workshop for over 200 headteachers, principals, and guidance counsellors in Education District 6, encompassing Ikeja, Mushin, and Oshodi-Isolo zones.

The workshop, timed to coincide with the start of a new school term, underscored the administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of children across the state.

Speaking at the event, participants were reminded of their mandatory responsibility to report any suspected or actual cases of child abuse. Copies of the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy were distributed, and attendees were warned that failure to comply with these obligations could lead to civil and criminal sanctions.

“The policy applies to all schools, orphanages, and child-centred institutions, whether public or private,” emphasized a representative.

This directive highlights the seriousness with which the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration approaches child safety. Institutions found negligent or failing to implement the policy could face legal actions.

The workshop featured key facilitators, including Mr. Jubril Yakubu, who provided an overview of the policy, and the Executive Secretary of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), who outlined the laws safeguarding child rights. Mrs. Bisi Kayode further trained participants on how to handle sensitive disclosures professionally.

Attendees were also guided on the proper channels for reporting abuse, managing referrals, and tailoring the policy to suit their respective institutions. This comprehensive approach aims to equip educators with the skills and knowledge needed to protect vulnerable children effectively.

Reaffirming the State’s commitment to child welfare, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the DSVA, stated, “This initiative highlights our unyielding resolve to safeguard children and ensure their well-being. Every institution working with children must prioritize their safety, or face the consequences of non-compliance.”

The Lagos State Government continues to set a precedent in protecting the rights of children, ensuring that every child is nurtured in a safe and supportive environment. As schools resume, the administration’s firm stance on child protection signals a renewed commitment to a future where every child can thrive without fear.
